Yarmulke

At what age do Jewish boys start wearing yarmulke? I thought it was 13 but yesterday I saw a Jewish family with a young kid with a yarmulke so I must have been wrong.

Usually when the boy is big enough to keep the yarmulka on his head, or from the age where he can understand the basic meaning of covering your head.

That was quick! Thanks!

The answer is usually at the age of 3. It is a custom not to cut a boys hair until he is 3 and at that time he puts on a yarmulke and tzistis (tzistis if he is potty trained only)

That custom is called "Upsherin."  I once mistakingly told a rabbi that his daughter was cute.  He looked at me, sternly, his black hat nearly touching my face, and said, "She is a boy."

"I will eat your children"

A yarmulke is the skull cap worn by orthodox Jewish men. It's the most unique sign that identifies an orthodox Jew. The yarmulke is also known as a kippah. It's customary that a boy starts wearing a Jewish yarmulke by age three. The purpose of wearing a kippah, according to the Talmud, is to remind the Jews of God, who is the Higher Authority.

For the Jews, external actions create internal awareness. Wearing a kippah is a means for drawing out one's inner sense of respect for God. By wearing the cap, a Jew also proclaims, "I am a proud Jew." There are many styles of yarmulkes, such as a yarmulke of black velvet that covers most of the head, smaller suede ones or colorful crocheted yarmulkes.
