I refer to this line of thinking as Hypothetical History (what if).  Hindsight is a very accurate recorder of events.  Without delving further into this hypothesis, the only valid answer is "fear".  The Soviet Union, the United States and its WWII Allies feared Josef "Man of Steel" Stalin and vice versa.  Had that not been the case, the West, which had the worst problem with nerves,  would have prevented the descent of Winston's "Iron Curtain".
