Wine with Indian Food

I'm invited to a dinner this Thursday, and it's going to be an Indian meal. I usually bring wine with me, but I don't know if wine goes well with Indian food -- although I must admit I know very little about Indian food. Should I bring wine, and if so, which one?

Here are some ideas:

Starting with white wines, the things to look for are crisp, mineral flavours and a slight acidity. White wines would be matched with fish dishes, creamy vegetarian dishes or light chicken dishes. With a lightly spiced chicken dish incorporating coconut milk and ginger for instance, you could try something like an Australian Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay or a Pinot Blanc from California, or maybe an Italian Soave.

I see some good suggestions below.  I'd add that crisp whites, like Sauvignon Blanc, provide a nice offset for the spicy foods.  Another directions is something with a bit of sweetness, like a Riesling or a Viogner.  My article below elaborates and offers a number of specific bottles you might try (your dinner may have passed but hopefully you might be invited back!)

Although I am a huge fan of sauvignon blanc, I find that spicy foods are best paired with wines that have a bit more substance like a Gewutztraminer, Riesling (with a low level of residual sugar), or Pinot Gris.  Sparkling wine is also a great match for spicy foods, especially those that have a significant level of Pinot Noir.  Another consideration could be Chenin Blanc, but understand the styles vary dramatically, as does Indian food.  So the best bet is to bring something like a sparkling that is extremely versatile and always elegant!

Indian food is spicy so you need to get the wine that goes with spicy food.

Also the food has a lot of gravy so really the wine needs to snoothing and not too spicy.

Hmm..if you're going to an Indian family's house, I wouldn't bring wine as this isn't typical fare with Indian food. It is more appropriate to bring some form of dessert such as ice-cream, cake, pie etc. to top off the meal. Have fun! Indian food is spicy and tasty..you will enjoy it.

My go-to wine for Asian cuisine is Riesling.  I would go for a Kabinett as I think the semi-sweetness of the wine pairs deliciously with Indian fare.  But if you prefer a slightly drier wine, you can buy one that has "Trocken" on the label. 

 

Red will be fine as most the Indian foods are very spicy.
