Without looking at the feathers with a microscope or loupe, I can only speculate, but here goes.... Soot, from an old fire. Oil. Dead lice from when the birds were alive. Sticky dirt. Some kind of glue specks. Tree resin. Paint.

That depends what the cover is made of. If it's 100% cotton, do a cold cycle (no more than 30 degrees centigrade), non clorine bleache, and tumble dry low.

I can't see any feather...
