I am quite surprised. Is your aim mainly to create a site to have people share ideas? Like a forum? I would suggest that you build a website that draws traffic, and after that, start marketing it by adding a forum by choosing a forum hosting service like phpBB. They are reliable and pretty affordable.

However, it is essential for you to understand that you cannot simply build a forum without first having enough traffic. Traffic is the lifeblood of your business and without sufficient traffic, your forum is going to fail.

I strongly suggest that you choose a web hosting service, and start looking at competition sites and see how you can make yourself different. By doing this, you allow yourself to be unique and readers want that in a website. I also think that you should look into monetizing your website, through affiliate marketing like selling equipment that you need on investigations. (you can sign up as an Amazon affiliate and be paid commissions for every sale made through your website).

Everyone builds a website with hopes of creating a business. Remember, if you choose a normal cheap web host, you won't get much help, and you will need to figure out language and programming skills like JavaScript, HTML, CSS and C++ in order to create a working site.
