Try googling the state comptroller's websites for the states in which you have lived/worked.  Many of them have unclaimed property lists available.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

www.unclaimed.org should lead you to a state Unclaimed Property web site, which does not charge anything. However there are emails that offer to search for unclaimed money for a price, and some of them may mention unclaimed.org but they don't really go there.

It depends where the funds where tied in before you lost them. Have you tried using the link you added? I think using their directory could help you.
