I use Google maps to plan out walking courses in my neighborhood.

http://maps.google.com.  Type in your city with an address. You will see the area in detail.

Google Map Search gadget.  Enter your info to & from; mode to transportation;  search will tell you route; distance in miles; time it takes to get there depending on your mode of trans. (approx); and is printable.
