Hi,

Years ago sailors suffered from Scurvy.  Some 300 hundred years ago (around 1700) they found that eating oranges (and citrus fruits) prevent it.  Than they found the Vitamin c (which is also known as Ascorbic Acid).  Human body doesn't produce Vitamine C (most animals do it !) so if  no external fresh supply of Vitamine C one will suffer from Scurvy.  Scurvy has very special signs: Stiffness, tierd, special colour, etc.  See more here: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/vitamins/vitaminC/
Best regards,
Love is the battery of life....

To prevent scurvy, which caused bleeding gums and fallin teeth, the British Navy required all its sailors to eat lemons or limes. That is why British sailors today are called Limies.

Lack of vitamin c results in scurvy, various types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and skin disorders.
