It's free and easy to use.  It can be state specific or nationwide.

Contact your state government office (they should have a general number) then ask for the unclaimed money dept.  They will tell you what to do next.

Missingmoney.com is a great way to search state sites for free. It includes unclaimed funds turned over to states, and though it's not always up to date or absolutely complete, you can click over to the individual state government sites from it and search them also.

There are also other places that hold unclaimed money, like HUD, the Veterans Administration, etc. They can also be searched free. If you suspect you might have unclaimed funds from another government agency or that aren't showing up in a free state search or through missingmoney.com, try googling for unclaimed funds and the kind of money or the agency that might be holding it, to see if there's a separate free search available from that agency. Here's a blog post with more info on free ways to search for unclaimed money.

Either go to www.NAUPA.org , which is the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators or  missingmoney.com .  The reason I mention NAUPA is because besides having links to missingmoney.com they also have many links to other sites holding unclaimed money.
