They were being experimented with in the mid 1960s, but did not become available to the public until 1997.  Like the microwave oven, early models were too expensive for the average household. (A 42" screen cost around $15,000...more that the price of a new Saturn!)  Around 2005, more affordable models hit the market and sold like hotcakes.  Some manufacturers tried to cheat, offering old fashioned CRT sets with flat-front picture tubes, calling them "flat-screens".  But the public soon caught on that the plasma & LCD/LED sets were the real thing.
