Go to Settings in the upper AOL taskbar and when that window comes up...look for IM Settings.  You can set your IM preferences from there.  Go all the way across the IM tab bar.  Under IM Privacy tab...allow all.  When people you want to block IM you...just right click on their names in the buddy list <because AOL can automatically add them to your buddy list if you have chosen that option>...anyway...right click on their name in your buddy list and click on BLOCK.  That way they can't see you or Instant Message you.  Check out the preference options available to you under IM Privacy where I told you to go.   AOL...upper taskbar...Settings...IM Settings............there you choose your IM preferences.

Good Luck!
