Microsoft Word 2007 will automatically convert your MA Word 2003 .doc to a .docx format.  It will give you a prompt.  Note that it will give you another prompt to convert your new work to a .doc format, but not everything will convert automatically.

Later versions of MS Word may not convert at all.  However, Adobe PDF will convert Word (any generation) to .pdf without difficulty.  Just follow the prompts.
