What is the true goal of a child's education?

Is it to prepare them to be a productive worker, a valuable resource? Should it not teach them how to think independently and formulate, discover their own solutions and opinions? If you were educated publicly, are you satisfied with that education? How does it compare to your child's education?

 this is one of the most important benefits and objectives of education:

 teach them how to think independently and formulate, discover their own solutions and opinions

That is "analytical process" and is one of the most significant reason for education (and it can be and is taught in most all levels of education and shoud be a main component of most all college level courses).

To get them prepared to be able to function sucessfully in todays society. That's why public education,today, is useless IMO. Education gets less and less funding as each year passes, and special interest groups have more influence on curriculum then ever. That's why my 10 year old daughter is going to be home schooled from grade 7 on.

Living forever isn't the trick, living with yourself forever is.

Albertfrank, you said it quite well. My public education was pretty much worthless as far as teaching me about life and how to maneuver around in it. It is very narrow minded and directed towards attending college, which, obviously all the students are not suited for, nor able to afford.

Also, I found independent thought was something that was squelched, not fostered.
