My passport recently expired. It was not noticed when I left for the Dominican Republic for my father in law's funeral. Three days later the airline gate agent in the Dominican Republic refused to allow me on the plane to return home. My wife was with me. She got on the plane so that she could return to our three young sons who were staying with friends. Should they have allowed me, a US citizen to return and let US customs and immigration handle this or were they correct in detaining me in the Dominican Republic.

Legally they don't have to let you you on the plane, as should U.S. immigration decide to not let you in the country, the airline would be fined a large sum for not checking the proper paperwork and realizing that you were not legal to fly; they'd also be responsible for flying you back to the home country.

Immigration sends you back and fines the airline for transporting you with the proper documents.  So yes the airline is involved because they have to pay the fine as much as $10,000.
