Stitch a normal seam. With one layer of seam fabric folded to the side sew a straight stitch to show on right side of fabric the length of seam. Do this for both sides of seam. End results will look similar to a flat felled seam on the outside. A flat felled seam is the type of seam used on jeans that is on the leg length and is thick.

A top stitch seam can also be a lengthened stitch that is sewn on the right side of the garment (maybe around the armhole or around the neck or bottom of the garment) such as a blouse etc. Sewn about a 1/4"- 1/2" in.  Helps hold down the interfacing or just for looks.  It also works if there is no interfacing around the armhole of a blouse (just binding).  You can top stitch it down.  Hope this helps.
