That sounds like blossom-end rot. Here's some ideas that came from http://www.growgardentomatoes.com .

  • Keep soil moisture constant with mulching and consistent watering
  • Soil should have good drainage
  • Don't fertilize with too much nitrogen
  • Test soil for calcium deficiency
  • Don't cultivate too close to plant, thereby damaging roots
  • Use resistant varieties like Marglobe
