JBee, this was not an act of passion or the heat of the moment.  "Insanity" defenses do not work in such cases: psychologists may be "a little left of center," but dear God let's hope they aren't THAT stupid.

Any way we consider James Holmes' act, it was that of a terrorist, carried out in cold blood, and rates the death penalty.

if it was the act of a terrorist, what was the motive? What did he or his cause stand to gain from his actions? What was his cause? 

It certainly does warrent the death penalty but with the slant and compassion of those making the decisions "an eye for an eye" attitude will not be the decisive outcome. 

JBee, I would not be so much interested in revenge as prevention of recurrence.  Note that "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and a life for a life also," is the replacement for the natural human tendency to demand an eye for a broken fingernail. 

There is no question that we must repay terrorists in their coin.  The difference is that this terrorist will die by lethal injection, which is quick and painless.  His victims died by painful gunshot wounds. 

I suppose that I find it most obnoxious that this terrorist appears at the lead of this story, smirking. 

Anonymous, the motives of terrorists usually revolve around a deep-seated grudge, if not a homicidal delusion that another nation or people, "Must be taught a lesson."  To seriously contemplate the random and wanton taking of human life, where there is no cause or only a perceived cause, is not the process of a rational mind. 

War is a somewhat different matter.  War is the result of a despot's reckless act, or retaliation for a despot's reckless act. 

9-11 was clearly a deliberate provocation to war and that made war necessary.  We subdued the enemy. 

This man also hoped to provoke a nasty retaliation.  I only hope that our response is measured, effective, and wise.

JBee, please count on my prayers and condolences for the bereaved and aggrieved.  Leftists must exploit the suffering others endure for their personal financial gain, political influence, and personal aggrandizement, but that only shows how cheap and spiteful leftists really are.

My heart and thoughts go to the bereaved and aggreived.  It is best that we all stand together as human beings in this time of grief, not as ruthless political exploiters like our beloved dfrogpong.

Bill, terrrorists have a reason they do what they do. The Aurora shooter, as far as is known, had no reason at all for doing what he did. He is in contrast to Anders Breivik, who gave a reason for his attack in Norway to be politically motivated. The reason for Eric Rudolph's attack was given to be religiously motivated. There has been no admission to any motivation, political, religious, or otherwise, in the Aurora shooter's case.

How he came into possession of tens of thousands of dollars worth of military gear, being an unemployed university student, has yet to be determined, but at present, I refuse to jump to conclusions by labeling him as a terrorist. He could have been someone with a few weapons who went off the deep end, or there could be alot more to it that hasn't come to light yet.

Normally people would feel sorry for a lonely person with no friends or life but you are such a bitter racist hate monger your are despised as I am sure you are in the real world too.
