My tribe are extreme pacifists. They abhor violence of any kind. Even the thought of doing violence to another can make them genuinely ill. But I live in the real world, I'm old and disabled and there are bad people in this world who would kill me just for shits and giggles.We all know that far too well. My tribe has started to recognize that as well, they've just now expanded sentencing and charging procedure so as to hand down harsher penalties for criminal activities on the rez. They are the first tribe to do so since the federal government gave that prerogative to the tribes and, as such, will be closely watched by many other tribes to see how it all works. My people are extremely religious, and we follow the old ways. Well, the old ways are a PART of my religion, which is very much my own. But I think one has to be a realist no matter what your personal beliefs. Being a believer in peace and love and thinking the best of everybody is an ideal to be worked for and worthwhile. But I feel that if someone tries to hurt you or your family or your friends and loved one, it's time to stand up and show some balls, you know what I'm saying? I hate politics, and my attitude is very much along the lines of, if it leaves me alone, I'll leave it alone. Exactly the same attitude I have about snakes. But if a snake tries to bite me, I'm gonna whack it with a pointy stick.

Bonestructure, I will gladly make a peace accord with you on that: violence is truly the last resort. When there is only that last resort act decisively and according to established procedure.

No rational person kills without conscience. However, irrational persons lack that conscience to comprise a thinking entity. How many times do we have to see that?

There is a couple I know. They are model citizens, he is medically retired both from the military and from police duty and in both cases decorated for valor.

She is a retired State administrator who had all the powers of a judge. They suffered a breakin to their home (by one near and deat to them both). The man was stabbed nearly to death. By the time the police arrived the assailant could have killed both and fled never to be caught. Clearly that was his plan.

He would have been a "proven contract killer" and could have made over a million dollars a year murdering people for the mob (and face it, he lived in a town that is fully controlled by the Mafia). Mafia hits usually go for high five figures and police sometimes hesitate to apprehend them knowing that they are very well connected and have a "code of practice."

It gets better! Because the man has been assaulted and the assailant acted with intent to commit murder, and the victim has suffered repeated threats on his life, the local Sheriff's Department insisted that he surrender all his weapons! The wifre had to buy more so that they had some means of self defense.

When the assailant returns as he has sworn to do, he will finish the job, the mafia will have another experienced hit man suitable for their advanced training, and there is nothing anyone can do but be killed.

There is no way to justify such a miscarriage of justice IMHO, but that happens whenever leftist liberals get a chance to speak.
