Engineer Thinks this answer is Helpful:

The "Three Strikes" law has indeed reduced violent crime, to the horror of criminals.

One conviction for a violent felony gives the offender a long prison sentence and a stern warning: if he repeats the crime, the next penalty will be much harsher.

If he commits a second violent crime, he gets a longer sentence in a harsher prison, and a stern warning that if he commits a third violent crime he will face the death penalty -- no questions asked or pleas bargained.

The third conviction automatically labels the criminal an habitual offender and the death penalty is automatic.

It is draconian, Jeremiah Wright is in opposition to it because so many of his "congregation" are fugitives from justice, and Obama opposes it because it is fair and well considered.

Any way we look at career criminals, this is one career that does not pay . . . nor should it.
