Who's your favorite tennis player of all time? Why? Pick one in ATP and one in WTA
Good question. I'll pick Pete Sampras and Martina Navratilova. Neither was glamorous. But Sampras worked hard to be the best, even when his career was just about over. And Navratilova kept up a winner's attitude even when people put her down.
Female player: Chris Evert. She was the durable, consistent, professional and interesting to watch (because she always played against more athletic and powerful players, it was interesting to see how her concentration and competitiveness would match up to theirs). Male player: Roger Federer. Another player whose record is outstanding, he is also the male player who treats the game like a dance -- where he's the premier danseur. Also, his love of the game is obvious. And, since he plans to play until he's in his mid-thirties, the tennis audiences will remain captivated by his play. It'll be interesting to see how he continues to solve the sledge-hammer stroke players who sometimes treat the game like it's target-shooting practice.
I think John McEnroe was really a great player. He won the French Open mixed doubles and won 7 Grand Slam singles titles and 9 doubles titles before retiring in 1992. He was controversial, of course, but this made watching him even more exciting!
