It depends upon what kind of software you use. Right Click on the anti virus icon next to the clock on the corner. You will have an option to either suspend/stop it, or to turn it off. To turn it back on, just click the icon (if it were just stopped) to resume, or go to Start > Program > to your anti-virus program. If you have to restart your PC, the anti-virus program will automatically restart.
