'Ted' is a common nickname for the name Edward.

While I won't disagree with JK I will say that I've known a number of Edward's in my life and all were called Eddie, while I've never known an Edward called Teddy. I have known several Theodore's who were called Teddy. What's interesting to me is that as many years as I've known of Teddy Kennedy, I've never thought of why he wasn't called Eddie.

Although some Edwards may have been called Ed or Eddie, others were called Ned, Neddy or Ted.
