you dont say if your motor is an early or late model engine. If it has a distributor, or electronic ignition with "coil paks". I dont know about the electronic, but the mechanical distributor engines are 30 degrees dwell and total advance timing should be around 32 degrees[that can be increased until the engine starts "Pinging"] then back off two degrees, and you are set. If you are using a feeler guage to manually set the points, if there are "points" 19 degrees gap, will get you usually to 30 degrees dwell, when you check with a meter. your engine is a GM chevy big block 454
