Hi MrBrown,

Following is the list of ranks with the relevant belt (and uniform):

10th Gup:  White Belt                                              (white)
9th Gup  :  White Belt with one blue stripe on tip    (white)
8th Gup  :  Orange Belt                                            (white)
7th Gup  :  Orange Belt with one blue stripe on tip (white)
6th Gup  :  Green Belt                                              (white with green lapel trim)
5th Gup  :  Green Belt with one blue stripe on tip    (white with green lapel trim)
4th Gup  :  Green Belt with two blue stripes on tip  (white with green lapel trim)
3rd Gup  :  Red Belt                                               (white with red lapel trim)
2nd Gup :  Red Belt with one blue stripe on tip     (same)
1st Gup  :  Red Belt with two blue stripes on tip   (same)

Note that actually there is no Black belt but rather a Midnight Blue one (however sometimes trainers tend to give Black belts in order to avoid confusion).

Dan 1-3 are called 'You Dan Ja' and senior Dan 4-8 are called 'Ko Dan Ja'.
They all have same uniform: White with lapel, sleeves, and borders trimmed.

1st Dan  :  Midnight Blue Belt
2nd Dan :  Midnight Blue Belt with two white stripes on tip
3rd Dan  :  Midnight Blue Belt with three white stripes on tip
4th to 8th Dan :Midnight Blue Belt with red stipe in center of belt all around

Hope that's what you were looking for.

Osher

Thank you for the info, but it's not what I was looking for,  Hwang Kee is the founder of modern Tang Soo Do.  He opened the Moo Duk Kwan in 1945 and, over time, awarded many black (or very dark blue) belts.  Today, the number is above 40,000.  What I was asking is WHERE is the list of numbered black (or very dark blue) belts?  My Instructor has BB number 6421 which he earned in Korea in 1963.  I would like to know where the list is and I would like to see it.

Mr. Brown.

Hi,
You are right.
On the promotion of any student to Cho Dan (1st Dan) they are awarded a dan bon or dan number by the Grandmaster Kwan Jang Nim H.C. Hwang (the son of the founder Hwang Kee - who died on July 14th 2002).
Their name and number are recorded in the Kwan Jeok Bu (Moo Duk Kwan definitive book listing the date of seniority of the organisations members).
The Headquarters of World MDK is in Seoul, Korea. I assume that book is there, but I don't think it's available for you to read.

Well, that's what I was wondering, i.e. where the book is and can it be looked at.

BTW, I thought H.C. Hwang  moved the HQ to New Jersey.  If that is correct, would the Kwan Jeok Bu be in NJ??
