How do we know who is a good divorce lawyer? Do we go by advertisement or only word of mouth? I am trying to help my sister find a good divorce lawyer, but I don't know where to start looking.

In order to find a good attorney word of mouth always works well. Ask around to see if anyone has had a good experience with an attorney. You can also check attorneys business ratings at the Better Business Bureau.

If the couple is honest, no one hiding assets or making false allegations of sexual molest to get a foot up in a custody battle, then the best way to get a divorce is not to hire separate lawyers at all. Once lawyers get involved cases tend to get expensive and nasty because the more the couple fights the more the lawyers get paid. If decent, honest people want to divorce, for your children's sake, use a mediator and avoid court, judges and separate lawyers at all costs. If you don't know what divorce mediation is, take a look at my website. Get an idea of what it is all about. If the message of Peaceful Divorce appeals to you then google or Yelp.com and look for divorce mediation with the name of the largest town in your area. Look for mediators who are divorce lawyers but who focus on mediation as opposed to litigation. Unfortunately there are a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing who are pretending to be mediators but are really gladiators who don't know how to structure win/win deals. You want to know what percentage of their business is mediation, how many mediations they have done, what their success rate is and what their fees are.
