The Ford motor company for some reason, loves to use relays throughout their electrical systems.  Even the headlight switch has a relay.  When the relay starts to weaken, it cuts the lights on and off.  Your problem is in the headlight switch.  The new aftermarket switches dont have the relay so you wont have the problem again...

Well, leave it to Fix Or Replace Daily to put relays where they don't belong.  I can see a relay for the starter, but light circuit relays tend to develop weak windings.

The solution is to replace the relay AND the switch.  Also, double-check the lights ahead detector.  It is a photoelectric switch located in the grille that tells the lights to switch to low-beam when another car approaches after dark.

The problem there is remarlably simple to fix, but if that doesn't work, you're into it for a major system overhaul.

Find the photoreceptor and clean the lens VERY CAREFULLY.  Use ammonia based cleaner, never a solvent.  If that doesn't correct the problem, replace it, the relay, and double check the dashboard switch to be sure you have gotten the whole mess under control.
