Are you a successful editor?

I was wondering if anyone edits novels and if so what steps did you take to become a successful editor?  I think I have the talent to edit (and possibly write) but am very vague on where to start.

I went to school for journalism, and also after being in the Army doing a job that I did not like, I re-enlisted to change over to journalism.  I worked in the Public Affairs Division and created newspaper for military bases, and civilian newspaper.  You will need to learn copy editing symbols.  I have never edited novels, but did work on a movie, radio commercials, and edited the base commanders speeches.  Take some courses.  You may have talent.  I suggest that you contact a newspaper in your area for experience as a stringer.  A stringer is someone whom provides articles.  Or get the Writer' Market Directory and submit stories in any category. If you are a good writer, then you can be a good editor.  But learn the copyediting skills.  My favorite one to use are listed in the AP (Associated Press) Stylebook.  Most stories written in major newspaper are using AP Wire Reports.  But purchase the stylebook and learn the rules of each page.  It will teach you when to capitalize President of the U.S and when to lowercase it.  It also includes a vast section of sports writing information.  Have fun, and make that book your bible.

I'll search, while you wait.
