Individuals don't sponsor show dogs. Sometimes it's a corporate sponsor, for advertising during the show that has a large audience, sometimes it's a breed kennel, for revenue to support the breed's club events, contributions to breed specific rescues and funding for disease control and sometimes it is individual States where the show itself, is a community event and can center around bringing people and business together.

Sponsoring a particular breed doesn't generate anything by whichever dog wins because people don't bet on the dogs. It's much closer to a fundraising/competition type event that shows people the ideal appearance, behavior and agility of each breed and, can, in some ways be considered educational; it sets the bar on ideal animal care of the most loyal animals to humans and that interests a lot of people and also turns off a lot people who feel the show dog doesn't have a normal life. It depends on how you look at it.

In many instances, it also helps people considering adopting a rescue dog, learn more about every breed and be able to choose the dog that can best adapt to or fit into their lifestyle. Many times, the number of dog adoptions increase right after an AKC competition because it is informative. So, in addition to advertising, fundraising and the social aspect, sponsorship of an AKC show, is a form of public service on behalf of animals.
