we are - estamos/somos

you are - tú estás/eres or vosotros estáis/sois or ustedes están/son

they are - ellos/ellas están/son

It depends on what you want to say. If it's a matter of permanent being, we'll use the form ser (somos, eres, sois, son). If it's something that changes like a place, then we'll say: estamos, estás, estáis, están, according to the personal pronoun.

It depends on what you wanna say.

The verb "Are" comes from its infinitive form "to be".

In the Spanish version, the verb "to be" is "ser" as well as "estar".

Generally speaking, "ser" is for the following uses: identity, profession, characteristics, origin. Examples are:

"Tú eres Paula" or "Usted es Paula". (You are Paula)

"Tú eres alumna" or "Usted es alumna". (You are a student)

"Tú eres alta" or "Usted es alta". (You are tall)

"Tú eres de Irlandia" or "Usted es de Irlandia". (You are from Ireland)

P/S: Tú is the informal way of addressing someone, and Usted is formal.

Generally speaking, "estar" is for the following uses: to indicate geographical position, an non-permanent emotion/condition, a temporary change in characteristics. Examples are:

"Tú estás en Irlandia" or "Usted está en Irlandia". (You are in Ireland)

"Tú estás contento" or "Usted está contento". (You are happy)

"Tú estás sucio" or "Usted está sucio". (You are dirty - after a rough game of football. for example)

In the plural form, the verb "are" can also refer to "you all are", "they are" or "we are".

For "you all are", the right way of saying it is "ustedes son"

For "they are", it can either be "ellos son" (if the "they" is referring to a masculine or mixed noun) and "ellas son" (for feminine nouns).

For "we are", it can either be "nosotros somos" or "nosotras somos". Again, whether its "nosotros" or "nosotras", it depends on whether the group is a masculine (use "nosotros"), mixed (use "nosotros") or feminine one (use "nosotras").
