Why so many spam and viruses?

Why has AOL Mail become such a piece of crap recently? My main email account is consistently being compromised. I change the password regularly. I run virus software. Yet on a regular basis spam and viruses are being sent through my account. I have had this account since 1997, but since I no longer pay for it, AOL will not provide any support. I hate to kill my first ever email account, but it looks like that is the only solution.
