US Army Speial Forces is the ONLY Armed Forces unit that issues the Green Beret. No other nation has done it to the best of my knowledge.
USAF has a Special Duty Unit, issued a Blue Beret. Their training is every bit as thorough as that of Army Special Forces, only tailored to the USAF mission profile.
USMC Forest Recon gets about the same training and passes the same standards. However, we do not issue special insignia except for a pocket clasp for utility uniform and a ribbon that goes on dress uniforms.
US Navy UDT (Seals) has their special operations. They train to the same standards as USAF and USA Special Forces and USMC Forest Recon. Their insignia is the Silver Crow. Respect them.
USMC also has a Desert Recon that deals with issues unique to the Middle East. Their means of recognition is classified.
One thing that will distinguish the actual veteran from the boastful recruit is that he is quite hesitant to speak of his duty. He might give you his service record without divulging classified information but professionals know better than to blow their most necessary secret: that they have nothing to prove, having proven themselves already.
if you have been there, you know hw it is.
This guy is in his 50's. He's about 5 feet 4 inches tall. He claims to be a former South African green beret, which means he was probably active sometime in the 80's or 90's. He claims he has seen some fellow soldiers get blown up, but I can find no record of South Africa even being involved in a war anywhere in this time period. I have already caught him in several lies on other issues so his veracity is already in doubt.
Anonymous there are lots of "wannabe" soldiers of fortune. Fantasy and boast do not equal experience.
Immediately after a battle you don't want to talk about it. Years later you might. The dust has settled. If the guy is in his 50's and was in South Africa, that means he was active in the sixties or seventies. He would have retired no later than 1990.
There were a few "old roosters" who served with us in Desert Storm but they were scouts on motorcycles and quads checking out how solid the sand was if we wanted to put tanks through it.
If you have an old rooster that might fit the dates but the guy might just be making up for a lack of trigger time.
Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and answer them
