Social security benefit to ex spoises

My ex husband died a year ago. neither of us ever remarried. He was married before me for 10 years. His first wife is now collecting his social sec benefits. I am eligible to collect these benefits in 6 years at 62. Why is the first wife eligible..she was remarried briefly after she and my ex divorced. And, is she drawing down monies that will lessen my benefit? Thamks

You are eligible to draw off you ex husband if you were married at least ten years.  Your amount will not decrease just because his last wife is drawing it to.

As long as the former spouse is not currently married, she is entitled to SSD based on her ex-husband's SS. You are still entitled to benefits based on his employment history and the amount won't be affected. I would, however, urge you not to take your retirement at 62 but wait until your actual retirement date at 65-67 (depending on your birth year). If you take early Social Security retirement, your benefits will be permanently decreased aside from cost of living increases.

I agree with pam if you can afford to do it wait for your age of full retirement......And don't get married.
