Can babies really learn sign language? I tried a sign language class a few years back and I had difficulty. I can't imagine doing it with a baby.

My now-4-year-old grandchild, who is an articulate little child was taught baby sign language when she was an infant. We taught her up, down, more, milk, tree, swing, I love you, food, bottle, and other appropriate words. The concept was: that their tongues and lips aren't developed to speak at such a young age, whereas they can do the signs to communicate, once they understand them. It really worked and was lots of fun. Because she could make herself understood when she wanted to go to the park when she was a few months older, or wanted more of something if she was eating, or wanted to say I love you and see the reaction, her communication skills were sophisticated for her age. I highly recommend it.

Deaf babies learn to sign long before their first birthday.  Using baby sign language is a good idea for all babies.  Pick a few important signs related to daily activities and you will see how quickly your baby will be communicating via sign with you.

I feel it is a great thing for all children to learn to sign, it helps teach them empathy and apathy towards other less fortunate... and the younger they are the better and faster they will learn..being retired from the medical field signing has been lifesaving for many...

Absolutely!! Baby sign language is powerful way to help babies increase language abilities earlier than their little bodies can handle oral language skills.

Babies naturally speak with their hands- reaching up to be picked up, waving hello and bye- it's amazing what they can learn. If you teach a few signs at a time, they pick up on the language in a few months. What's really incredible is the amount of knowledge that they are picking up on even though you don't know it. With sign language, they can communicate what they know and help you get excited to teach them more. (A 21 month old identifying "Seahorse?" by name- yes!) www.signingmatters.com
