When my mom had shoulder surgery they inserted a small needle under the skin that was connected to a small vial of pain medication that blocked the pain for 4 to 5 days. When the vial turned clear it was empty, then all she had to do was pull the small needle out. They also had her on Oxycontin, so she was pretty heavily sedated for about a week. The amount of pain meds depends on what kind of repairs need to be performed.
