There are a lot of factors. Unique content, meta tags, title tag, title and meta description all influence the ranking of a website. Create content that is valuable to visitors not only to search engines. Participate in forums  as well as QAs and post blog comments. Build high quality links.

I have been working in Internet marketing in Toronto for years and with my experience these are all the essential things to get higher ranking in Google first page.
