Self development books?

I participated in a Dale Carnegie course and found his two books, How to win Friends and How to Stop Worrying. The reason they were so helpful was because I read them in conjunciton with the course and the course gave me the necessary and valuable feedback from the instructor and the students. Without feedback no book can be effective.

Not a single one. You know what changed my life? Deciding I had had enough of being a miserable sonofabitch and sitting down and deciding what kind of person I wanted to be, and then setting reasonable goals and steps to become that person. Dealing with issues from being abused, from being the child of an alcoholic, and from a lot of tragedies in my life. I worked my ass off to deal with those issues, but I'm pretty happy with myself at this point. And no self help book in the world could have helped me find my way through my own life.

The short answer to your question is no, self help books won't change your life. What they can do however, is give you the knowledge and the inspiration to make changes yourself. The books by themselves won't do a thing. Only you have that power.
