If the circumference of a circle is about 60 in.  What is the diameter to the nearest tenth of an inch?   Also, if the radius of the large circle is 8 in. The radius of each of the smaller circles is 1 in.  Find the area of the shaded region to the nearest unit.  I have no idea where to begin.  I am trying to teach myself a middle aged woman simple math.  I figured it's never too late to learn.  Thanks

"Shaded" means they overlap somehow, but we cannot see your diagram, or

get the idea from your words, of how the smaller ones are placed on the larger.

Please give more details.

If they are apart from eachother with their centres on the circumference of the larger, a very rough estimate would be pi X 8^2 minus 2 X (1/2) pi ~ 63 pi ~ 198 square units.
