Runner on 3rd with 1 out. Batter grounds to shortstop and is thrown out at 1st. Runner from 3rd scores. Does this count as a time at bat for the batter or is it a sacrifice? Our scorekeeper says it ...

A fly ball to the outfield is also a sacrifice.  I sure don't understand why an infield grounder isn't, a bunt is.  After all, they're technically both grounders.  Strange!

I believe it's more of an "intent" thing. When a hitter bunts in that situation he's giving himself up so they can score a run, hence the sacrifice. When the hitter swings away and grounds out, he was trying to get a hit, not trying to give himself up, hence no sacrifice.

Interestingly, if you bunt to move a runner over, from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, it's also considered a sacrifice. But if a runner moves over from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd on a fly ball it's NOT a sacrifice.
