Rolling the lawn

We rolled our lawn today for the third time this spring. Do you roll your lawn to get it ready for the year? I still am not sure why we do it, but we do. I don't notice a ton of difference.

Rolling your lawn is normally unnecessary unless you are planning on playing some lawn games or you have a cricket pitch on it.  When you roll the lawn it compacts the top surface and stops moisture from rain and sprinklers from penetrating the surface and you end up with very hard soil.  The same goes for nutrients from decaying grass clippings or feed.  If you have an uneven lawn with bumps or lumps form when the turf was put down this won't solve the problem.

One solution if you have already rolled a lot is to aerate the lawn which makes deep holes or removes cores of soil that enable the water and nutrients to penetrate deeper promoting healthy grass and extensive root systems.  You can use lawn aerator shoes or a mechanical aerator for this.
