Riding without bit

what can I use for a little more control with an older (28) horse who rides fairly well with a halter and 2 lead ropes? I have always used a snaffle bit with him but would like him to be able to graze sometimes.

Hi Robin , Has your horse ever had a curb bit in his mouth ?  Do you have riding experience using a curb bit ?  There are grazing bits on the market they are widely used out west on cattle ranches . But they are curb bits , and if a horse is not use to them and the time is not taken to get them use to it , it will cause more problems in the end .  As with any other curb you need light hands .  As you know the bit does not control the horse , it's the training and the relationship .   Do you have any experience with a bosal ? That's another ideal .  To be honest with you since he's 28 yrs . old I'd probably leave him alone in his snaffle , keep a halter with you so you can switch it out so he can graze .  If he bridles easy it's not a big deal , if he doesn't work with him , so the switch is fast & easy .  Enjoy your boy he sounds like a nice horse .
