I'm a long way  from being expert at this, that said, here's what I'd try first.  Uninstall Chrome.  Then, do a "System Reset".  Reset your computer back to  date earlier than you first had the problem.  After you do that, you can download Chrome again.  No guarantees this will work, but it's worth a try, if you haven't already done it.  Best of luck.

I had the same problem (also XP) so I closed chrome and found a folder called Default Tab in C:\Program Files - I then tried to delete the entire folder but was not allowed. I opened the folder and inside there are 3 items, I was allowed to delete 2 of them so I did that and left the remaining file. I then reopened chrome and the extension problem is gone. Hope this works for others.

I have Revo Uninstaller. If you use it just take your time and read and follow directions. http://download.cnet.com/3028-2096_4-10687648.html?c=SEM&s=fivemill&pid=dlcom_sem&aid=revo%20uninstaller-e&dlc=n

---------- It's free. Revo Uninstaller ------ I mostly rely on highjackthis after I have it analyzed at ------ http://hijackthis.de/index.php ==== analyze hijackthis

I see some good advice here, and I have a little more.  Microsoft has a help and support site that did great work for me when I had a somewhat similar problem.  No offense to cgrammer0203, but it's sometimes difficult to get help from Hijackthis.  If you want to try the Microsoft route, here's the email address.  v-30 all @ mssupport .microsoft .com  Leave the spaces out if you want to email them.  I have to do that because AOL Answers security will erase it if it's in the proper form.   They also have a website you might try.  here is the link  http ://support.microsoft .com/select/?target=assistance   Once again, leave the spaces if you type it into a search engine.
