Do you know of anything that will remove the creosote odor

Do you know of anything that will remove the creosote odor from treated logs that were used to build the cabin in 1950. I used a product called 'Log Boss' that was advertised to encapsulate the logs, thereby romoving the odor. It lessened the odor, but it persists, and will soon permeate all the furnishings. Will polyurethane work ? or shellac ? anything ?

I am seeking an answer to a similar problem.  I am working on the renovation of a historic barn into an office building.  The vertical posts are creosoted.  How do I encapsulate these so that they do not smell and/or pose a health risk?

In Australia, they use creosote as a rodent control, also camphor < emits a kind of buzz which the rat brain decodes as predator warning>, so maybe put up with the odor - creosote contains an acid which is highly toxic to rat organs. They hate the smell and will stay away.

Thank you for the reply. In answer...over the winter, while locked up with no food, only the odor...we found 43 mice in our traps when we opened up in the spring. Seems mice are not repelled by the odor.

That can be tricky, Since you seem not sure  and there is a safe easy way to find out the right way. do you have a home Depoe near you ? I would call then ask for the deparmnt head in charge, you don't want some young kid giving you advised , when they say I think this or that mite work RED flag ask for the supervior etc and explain what would be the best stuff use .

Only if you have been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

see above answer Home depoe, and or any painting store usually carys various materails to suit your needs, The inportant fact you mentioned and dont forget to ask and is it also safe.

Did anyone find an answer to this problem?  We have a house at the shore that is on pilings.  Some of them are enclosed in a storage area under the house.  The creosote odor is strong and we would like to seal them to eliminate this.  I went to Home Depot today--they had some recommendations, but were not sure.  I think it is going to take something stronger than usual for this.

I called AFM and they recommended Dynoseal paint to encapsulate the creosote wood. (http://www.buildingforhealth.com/proddetail.php?prod=AFM_DYSL)

There's a company called Creosote Odor Removal dot com (i think)  that I called for a bad foundation smell.  They sprayed something and it disappeared on the spot.  That was over a year ago and I have a 5 year guarantee.  It wasn't cheap, but had tried other solutions and the smell kept coming back.
