If you want to be an effective praise and worship leader, how much training do you need and where would you go to get it

I am a Praise and Worship leader, or a Music Minister, whichever you prefer.  You didn't say why you wanted to have this talent or how you are going to use it, so I must assume you have been "called", by God, not man, to this ministerial position.  Now, for your question:  You don't NEED any training or music education to be effective if you are called, by God, to that ministry.  Of course, you want to take every opportunity to educate yourself, not only in music, but general ministry as well but when God calls you, He also equips you.  Having said that, if you are truly called and have the opportunity, you should get a degree in music from a reputable college or university.  It is absolutely necessary that you read music.  Without that, you can't lead very effectively.  I have been a music minister for the past 30 years while, at the same time, I've sung with a traveling quartet.  The only music education I have is 1 year of vocal lessons. 

You also need to check with the church where you are going to serve.  They may have certain qualifications you need to obtain.

I wish you all the best in your endeavers, but also realize that when you enter this field, you will be expected, by your congregation, to be, first, a minister, then a music leader.
