Red flags went up in my mind when he said it was not his fault.  People have to take responsibility for themselves.  All of us have lost loved ones. That is no excuse for lashing out at people.  I don't think you want to be on the receiving end of this.   He has to get himself under control.

You've got to trust your gut instincts.  You were right to be on guard. Don't involve yourself with this guy while he is still such a mess.  Find a young man who has his stuff together and knows how to treat people nicely.
