The short answer is not enough. There are many programs that are chipping away at this problem, but in no way near the scale that is needed.

Conservative estimates are that we need to reduce our greenhouse gasses by 80% (to 20% of existing levels) by 2020. Even the most aggressive proposals in the halls of government now toy with getting to this reduction by 2050.

All climate-change models indicate this is too little, to late. By that time global warming will have gone into a runaway condition, and civilization as we know it will not be supportable on the planet within a few decades after that.

Even if these models are wrong, or too pessimistic, the stakes are so high that these warnings need to be heeded with greatest of concern, and swift and comprehensive action undertaken to change our direction.Unfortunately, the evidence is that most climate models are too optimistic - probably a result of the researchers not wanting to appear as alarmist. Many indicators of the progress of climate change (climate chaos) and global warming are moving faster that the worst-case predictions.

Several proposals have been put forth to deal with this situation. There is evidence that we have the capacity to deal with 3 climate change catastrophies, and we only have one. That is the good news. See Al Gore's book Our Choice, for starters.

Wind, solar, biofuels and radical increases in efficiency can meet this challenge. We may need to be very diligent about conservation too, at least for a limited time while we get new power technologies up to speed.

There is much interference and outright disinformation from the coal and oil industries regarding this issue. It complicates the matter, and in the most irresponsible manner conceivable - weakens our ability to address this crisis on a global scale. Industry interference needs to be transformed, too, so that governments can do their natural job - taking care of the needs of the people.

We can do this.

Hydrogen gas energy?

Great energy source, but it is very dangerous because it is highly explosive. Right now, the best all around (most economical, easiest to produce, easiest to deliver, most abundant) is natural gas. Many coal fired plants are switching to natural gas.
