Recommendations for Software to Backup Files

What is a simple and intuitive program for synchronising my Windows PC's files and folders with an external backup hard drive?

Basically, I want to mirror the file structure on my computer with that on the hard drive. Then I want to periodically save my computer's files and folders to the backup drive.

The software should be able to recognise which files on the external drive have been modified since the last backup, and then give me the option to update them with the newer versions. It should be able to recognise when new files have been created on my computer since the last backup.

I'd be happy to get something for free, but I don't mind paying for good software.  I don't think I need any other features that I haven't mentioned...

I would say

2BrightSpark SyncBack SE would be a fair choice. There are free and shareware version, which both works well. It actually compares the contents of two locations (in your case, hard drive to hard drive) and specifies which files have modified. In advanced option, this software also gives you things like hash checking to ensure the integrity of the files. Acronis or Norton Ghost in the other hand specify on the area of backing up hard drives as an whole image, not files to files.
It's not, Valid.

Acronis

or Norton Ghost are the most familiar ones. You can check here for some free backup utilities.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I think that SyncBackSE should fit my needs. If anyone has any other recommendations, please feel free to post them...

Take a look at macro editors, too. Even though they require some learning, their flexibility is unparalleled. I would recommend you http://www.macro-expert.com.

Robotask (http://www.robotask.com) have a freeware called "Carbon Folder" based on their main editor, which does folder synchronisation only.

if you are looking for free online backup then i would suggest checking out mozy.com.

Two new suggestions:

One-click BackUp for WinRAR (http://acritum.com/ocb);

and http://www.getdropbox.com/ for online backup.
