What would happen if Rome was destroyed in modern day times?
Well this isn't a simple question to answer because there could be so many aspects to it. This question could actually create more questions. For one, what would happen to who? It would effect a lot of people, including those who caused its destruction (unless of course it was caused by an Act of God). For one, being a major religious center would cause waves of mourning worldwide, being that within Rome is Vatican City (The Holy See) which is home to one of the world's largest religions and is considered to be a Holy city by many. From a historical perspective it would be a tragedy as it is home to many ancient buildings and artifacts and is one of the most signifigant cities in the history of the world. Rome is unique in the fact that you can walk through ancient, medieval, and modern sections of the city...and its all part of the same city and has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years now. Another thing to consider is what caused the destruction? Was it a person(s)? A country? Terrorist group? Being that Italy is a part of NATO, it is highly unlikely another country would even attempt to attack Italy, much less Rome itself, as if they did, they would bring on the wrath of not just Italy, but NATO itself. Plus a lot of other countries would get involved too. A terrorist attack could be a possibility, but most likely wouldn't destroy the city entirely. Besides the impact on Catholicism and world religions in general, there would of course be a politcal impact. It's hard to say how dramatically this would effect Italian and European politics in general. Another factor to consider would be what political figures (both Italian and European Union) survived the attack or were out of town at the time. If few, or none survived an the EU or UN would probably set up an interim government somewhere else in Italy. And certainly, there would be an outpouring of mourning in general, as many people's friends and family members would have perished, and many people would mourn at the general sadness of the event, even if they didn't know anyone personally.
