I believe it was William Wadsworth Longfellow for first American rapper.  That's the earliest example I can think of off the top of my head.  But that's modern times.  Rap rhythms and rhymes have been around since before the written word.  The modern founder of hip hop music is another matter.  He was some strange guy in Detroit that no one ever heard of.  That was like late seventies.  Some people say that rap means Rhythmic American Poetry.

Consider the impact of hip hop culture on American society

Dj Kool Herc is credited by most and is the founder of hip hop. He used to play disco records in jamaca back in 1964 and started spinning and pulling the records back so that only the part at the end or "break" would play.... and he repeated this for the dancers and this part of the song thus is now refered to as the "break beat" because when he moved to ny people started "break dancing" or only dancing when he or other copying dj's spun using this style of pulling the records back to play only the breaks played and it all began. Is also how "break dancing" became the name for poppin and lockin. Others like "Gill scott herring" contributed  but Herc's contribution was most significant.
