What are rain flies, & where do they come from?

Recently in the month of July my Mum & her sister who lives half a mile away both had a large influx of rather docile flies. A pest control man said they were rain-flies & would be gone in a couple of days which they were.

I've never heard of them. What exactly are they?

Actually I doubt they live 24 hours because just as suddenly as the influx begins it ends the same way with suddenness. As you said they are attracted by light and come in swarms. If there is standing water (clear clean water I know of, not certain about stagnant or other impure water) they dive for it and drown immediately. Those which do not perish in water pitch on everything and soon shed their very fragile wings and become crawlers. They are quite easily killed by the slightest interference and even if not interfered with somehow disappear which I suppose means they die off out of sight leaving no evidence they were even there. Just a pesky and very temporary interference no harm except the clean up of their extremely delicate shed wings.

Your pest control guy was correct.

Rain-flies are very short-lived flies that come to life during the rains. They complete their life cycle under the ground and come up through small holes on the ground. Every colony will thus be home to hundreds of them.

Though they can be seen during the day, mostly they come out into the open at night in their first outing as fully grown flies. They are attracted by light and can thus actually create a lot of nuisance inside homes.

In our village in India, where I grew up, we used to make bonfires, which attracted these flies, as the only way to deal with their 'menace'. Our cats used to snack on them - a literally endless supply of them !

As you have rightly said, they are very docile, harmless beings. They normally do not live beyond 24 hours after their metamorphosis into adult flies.

Here is a pic of those humble creatures.

I'm no entomologist, but I think the pest control man was having a bit of fun with your Mum and sister.  So far as I know, a rain fly is the part of a tent that goes over the tent itself to shed rain and also to help shade the interior and keep it cooler and dryer.

If I can't always dazzle 'em with brilliance, I'll try baffling 'em with BS. Band of None
