Why ask "field" and not "field(s)" .

Some people do spend an entire working lifetime in one field.

But many of us have worked in multiple field over a career.  So for those of us who have had multiple careers, the answer could be lengthy (unlike say "plumber').

For me personally ...

My father worked at the same location for virtually all of his working career, in a federal civil service job -- like many people use to do back in the early and middle 1900's.    He was sure bored by it too and it was not at all stimulating for him; he made us aware.  It was "just a job" and done just for a "paycheck", nothing more challenging or interesting or rewarding than that.

I can not even imagine how miserable it would have made me to do that or anything close to that.   And, not so many do that anymore as they did back in that era.

My own changes of fields of study and work was one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.  Many people do dramatic changes of career direction in the last few decades--sometimes motivated by financial considerations (when employers closed or laid them off) but not infrequently just because they wanted to pursue a new and different career.

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR MANY ....

With the increasing trend in "career changing" has come a new trend for colleges to have a significant number of "Non-Traditional Students".  These are students often well above typical college age, who have been out in the world and worked and often have families and they are "returning to school" to get that college degree they never got or to get an additional degree or to enable them to go into new fields.  With the life experieince knowledge and with their maturity and with their genuine, serious motivation, these "non-traditional students" often graduate with honors (they are not, normally, out partying, drinking, doing drugs and looking for sex most every night and they are paying their own way, usually, and they have given up a lot, in many cases, to return to college.
